Music Playlist

Global Music Playlist Music is so powerful ways and it has the ability to connect different cultures around the world. It can tell stories, celebrate traditions, and even give us a glimpse into the daily lives of people we've never met. For this playlist, I chose four different songs from four unique cultures across two continents (plus Australia!). Some are rooted in ancient traditions, while others are modern takes that blend old sounds with new styles. I wanted a mix that shows just how wide and creative the world of music really is. Honestly, these tracks are just really cool to listen to. Russia (Europe/Asia) - “Kalinka” - Traditional      I have a Russian background so I wanted to dive deeper into the traditional music of Russian culture.  “Kalinka” is one of the most recognizable songs in Russian folk music. It was composed by Ivan Larionov in 1860. Though it has a known composer, its widespread popularity and integration into Russian culture have given...

Music & Family

Music & Family: An Interview with my Dad       I interviewed my dad, Nick, over a facetime call and he had a great time reminiscing on his history with music. I call my dad everyday so this was a fairly easy and quick convo.       We started with general questions so I could get a sense of what his earliest memories with music are and what he likes now. I first asked, "what are some of your earliest memories of music?" He responded with, "For sure m y Mom singing Petula Clark songs to me around the house.  ' My Love' by Petula Clark will bring me to tears just thinking of her.  Her compilation album 'Downtown' holds so many memories, my mom would sing that all. the. time."  My dad was born in July, 1965 and "My Love" was released in December, 1965.  My dad and his mom, Julie.      Going off that I wanted to see what kind of music he listened to while flourishing as an individual. He said, "Growing up I...

Music Rituals

Traditions & Rituals I don’t really have any specific music traditions in my family or friend group, and there aren’t any songs that are always played at certain events. I’ve also never been to a wedding or a funeral, so I can’t really speak on the music for those. Plus, I switch up the artists I listen to all the time, so this blog entry is a bit tough since I don’t have many music rituals. But I will say there are some artists whose music is so versatile that it fits different moods and occasions. In that sense, I guess I have “ritual artists” rather than ritual songs. One artist I can always turn to in different settings is Mac Miller. Mac Miller is very diverse in his discography. He succeeds when you need romantic songs, party anthems, or if you in those sad hours. If I'm hosting a party or a small get-together and I'm on aux, I'll likely start a radio  The Spins on Spotify. The Spins  is a good song at parties because of its upbeat and feel-good energy. It has ...

Music & Me

About Myself My name is Sofiya and I am a collegiate swimmer at Converse. I spent my first two years of college at Stonehill College in Easton, Massachusetts and now I'm here. I've moved all over the the country since the beginning. I was born in Las Vegas, NV and lived most of my childhood in Texas and Ohio, but my family and I moved to Sarasota, FL when I began 6th grade. I claim to be from Sarasota since I feel like most of my relationships, hobbies, and interests started and flourished there. I enjoy listening to music and most of my music taste actually stems from my older brother and older sister. Around 4th grade I started actively seeking out and listening to my own music through their guidance. My brother introduced me to Kid Cudi, Chance the Rapper, Kendrick Lamar, and the old Kanye. I was hooked in the drama and the art of music instantly. My sister and I would listen to more female artists like Lady Gaga and Rihanna. My older siblings are 8 years older than me, so ...
